We had the final review yesterday. The jury is so professional and responsible and there are so many amazing works that inspired me a lot.

The Original Armatures in the District

My site is a community between Foster city and Bair Island. It is facing a sea-level rise, gentrification risks. Also, to reach the requirement of the Green New Deal, the project aims to decarbonize the district and creating a justice balance and job opportunities in the district.

Bird’s Eye View of the District (Before Design)

For the strategies, as we can see from the map, the district’s edge will be flooded with 4 feet of sea-level rise. So my first strategy is to move part of the dense houses to the back. And build higher houses like 5-story apartments instead of these villas in the district. The strategy not only deals with the problem of sea-level rise but also provide more house units for people and will alleviate the gentrification in the district.

The second move is to add some urban farms and community centers in these communities and change the driveway to a street. The strategy introduces more green patches to the community and it encourages more participation to tie the residents together just as the precedent of Schoonschip shows. The strategy also adds more job opportunities and balances justice to some degrees. Also, it introduces more species to the area.

The third move is to add tidal marshes along the coast and change the walking paths to biking paths. Also, the project adds some wetlands along the coast to enrich landscape views. The strategy encourages people to use less carbon released as a way to transport and tries to build a healthier community.

Bird’s Eye View (After Design)

The professors in the jury suggest me to think about how to make people who currently live in the district live their houses to native people or farmlands. I need to think about how to benefit them when I am trying to make such a big move for them. I think it is a very good point. I am always thinking that we should return some lands back to native people but almost never think about the attitudes of the people who live here now. The better way to solve the risks in the district is to make the best use of vacant areas and take everybody’s benefit into account.
